Ovaprene

Ovaprene is an investigational, hormone-free, monthly intravaginal contraceptive that combines a physical barrier with the controlled release of non-hormonal agents to prevent pregnancy. The device consists of a flexible silicone ring with a tightly woven polymer matrix across its center. This matrix contains ferrous gluconate (a form of iron), vitamin C, glycine, and polyglycolide microparticles. When inserted into the vagina at the end of menstruation and worn until the next period, Ovaprene acts by two complementary mechanisms: - Physically blocking sperm from entering the cervical canal via its knitted polymer barrier. - Releasing ferrous gluconate and other agents locally to create an environment that impairs sperm motility through lipid peroxidation reactions. Ovaprene is designed for continuous use throughout the menstrual cycle without requiring action at each intercourse or daily administration. It does not contain hormones and does not require clinician fitting. Clinical studies have shown it effectively immobilizes sperm and prevents their progression into cervical mucus[1][2][3][4][5].
