Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oviderm is a topical medicinal cream containing 25% propylene glycol, developed by the Swedish pharmaceutical company Galenica AB. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of dry skin (xerosis) associated with various dermatological conditions, including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and ichthyosis. The active ingredient, propylene glycol, functions as a potent humectant that increases the water-holding capacity of the stratum corneum, thereby improving skin hydration and reinforcing the skin's natural barrier function. At a 25% concentration, it also possesses mild antimicrobial properties, which can be beneficial in preventing secondary infections in compromised skin. Oviderm is formulated to provide effective moisturization while minimizing the irritation often associated with high-concentration propylene glycol products, making it suitable for the long-term management of chronic dry skin conditions.
