Overview

Ovine heparin is a biological active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) developed by Changshan Kaijiejian Biopharma, a subsidiary of Hebei Changshan Biochemical Pharmaceutical. It is a glycosaminoglycan derived from sheep (ovine) intestinal mucosa, serving as an alternative to the standard porcine-derived heparin. Heparin functions as an anticoagulant by binding to antithrombin III (ATIII), inducing a conformational change that significantly enhances ATIII's ability to inactivate thrombin (Factor IIa) and activated Factor X (Factor Xa). This inhibition prevents the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, thereby hindering blood clot formation. Ovine heparin is currently in the preclinical stage and is intended to provide a diversified and secure supply of heparin, particularly in response to supply chain vulnerabilities associated with porcine diseases such as African Swine Fever.
