Overview

OVP (specifically OVP-1) refers to a series of phosphorylated 1,3-oxazole derivatives developed as novel phosphodiesterase III (PDE3) inhibitors. The leader compound, OVP-1 (diethyl ester of 5-N-alkylamino-2-{N-benzoyl-[(4-methylbenzylidene)glycyl]aminomethyl}-1,3-oxazol-4-ylphosphonic acid), has been investigated primarily for its antihypertensive and vasodilatory properties. Developed by the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry in Ukraine, OVP-1 acts by inhibiting PDE3 activity, which leads to increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and subsequent relaxation of vascular smooth muscle. Experimental studies in rat models have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing arterial hypertension and restoring PDE activity in the heart and aorta to normal levels. The compound is characterized by low toxicity and represents a potential new platform for cardiovascular therapeutics.
