OX17 is a therapeutic candidate developed by Oxeia Biopharmaceuticals, primarily investigated for the treatment of concussions and underlying metabolic dysfunction associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI). It is a synthetic analog of ghrelin, a peptide hormone that acts as an agonist at the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR-1a). The mechanism of action involves the activation of ghrelin receptors in the brain, which is thought to provide neuroprotective effects by reducing oxidative stress, stabilizing mitochondrial function, and decreasing neuroinflammation. By addressing the metabolic crisis that occurs following a head injury, OX17 aims to accelerate recovery and mitigate the long-term cognitive and physical symptoms of concussion.
