Overview

OX27 is a sublingual tablet formulation of fentanyl developed by Orexo AB using its proprietary drug delivery technology. It was specifically designed to treat breakthrough pain in cancer patients, a condition characterized by sudden, intense pain spikes that occur despite background pain management. The sublingual route was chosen to facilitate rapid absorption through the oral mucosa, aiming for a faster onset of analgesia compared to oral opioids. Although OX27 successfully completed a Phase 1 clinical trial in 2011, Orexo subsequently prioritized other assets in its portfolio, and the development of OX27 was not continued.
