Overview

Oxaflozane is a non-tricyclic antidepressant and anxiolytic drug that was introduced in France in 1982 by Solvay for the treatment of depression but has since been discontinued[1][5][7]. It acts as a prodrug to N-dealkyloxaflozane (flumexadol), which is a non-selective serotonin receptor agonist, primarily targeting the serotonin 5-HT1A and 5-HT2C receptors, with weaker activity at the 5-HT2A receptor[1][5]. At high doses, oxaflozane may also produce anticholinergic side effects. The drug was noted for its relatively rapid onset of action compared to other antidepressants[4].
