Overview

Oxaloacetate (OAA) is a small molecule and metabolic intermediate involved in several key biochemical pathways including the citric acid (Krebs) cycle, gluconeogenesis, the urea cycle, glyoxylate cycle, amino acid synthesis and degradation of glutamate. In the citric acid cycle it reacts with acetyl-CoA to form citrate. As a supplement or investigational therapy in humans it is being studied for its potential neuroprotective effects and mitochondrial support properties. Proposed mechanisms include enhancement of mitochondrial respiration and reduction of peripheral glutamate via activation of glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), which may help reduce excitotoxicity by acting as a "glutamate sink." Oxaloacetate has been investigated for use in Alzheimer's disease (AD), myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), Long COVID-related fatigue and premenstrual syndrome symptoms. It is available as a dietary supplement under brand names such as Jubilance[1][3][4][5][6][8].
