Overview
Oxane HD is a high-density silicone oil used as an internal tamponade during vitreoretinal surgery for complicated retinal detachments, particularly those with inferior or posterior breaks. It is a homogeneous mixture of ultra-pure silicone oil (polydimethylsiloxane) and a partially fluorinated olefin (perfluorohexyloctane, also known as RMN3). With a density of approximately 1.02 to 1.03 g/cm³, it is heavier than water and the vitreous humor, allowing it to provide effective pressure on the inferior retina. It was developed to overcome the limitations of standard silicone oils, which float and are less effective for inferior pathology.
