Overview
Oxazepam is a short-acting benzodiazepine used primarily for the treatment of anxiety disorders and acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms. It also has sedative-hypnotic, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and amnesic properties. Oxazepam acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the GABA-A receptor in the central nervous system, enhancing the inhibitory effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and thereby reducing neuronal excitability. Its pharmacokinetics are characterized by direct glucuronidation in the liver to inactive metabolites, making it suitable for elderly patients or those with impaired hepatic function. Compared to other benzodiazepines like diazepam, oxazepam has a shorter half-life and lower abuse potential due to slower absorption and brain entry[3][4][5][7].
