Overview

Oxazepam + naltrexone is a combination pharmacotherapy being investigated by the University of Kentucky for the treatment of methamphetamine dependence. This novel approach combines naltrexone, a small molecule opioid receptor antagonist, with oxazepam, a benzodiazepine that functions as a GABA-A receptor positive allosteric modulator. The rationale behind this combination is to simultaneously target the GABAergic and opioid systems to mitigate the reinforcing effects and withdrawal symptoms associated with methamphetamine use. The therapy has been evaluated in an inpatient human laboratory study (NCT01967381) to assess its safety, tolerability, and initial efficacy in reducing the pharmacodynamic effects of methamphetamine (Desoxyn).
