Overview

Oxazolam is a benzodiazepine derivative with anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties. It acts as a central nervous system depressant and is primarily indicated for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Oxazolam functions as a prodrug for desmethyldiazepam (also known as nordazepam), which means it is metabolized in the body to its active form. The drug exerts its effects by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors in the brain, leading to increased chloride ion influx and hyperpolarization of neuronal membranes. This results in inhibition of nerve signal transmission and produces calming effects. Oxazolam may also be used off-label for insomnia or as a pre-anesthetic medication[1][2][5][8].
