Overview

Oxazolone is a synthetic heterocyclic compound and functional group with the molecular formula C₁₂H₁₁NO₃ (for the commonly used immunological adjuvant form). It is primarily used in biomedical research as a haptenizing agent to induce acute or chronic inflammation in animal models—most notably for modeling colitis and atopic dermatitis. Oxazolone acts as an immunologic adjuvant and sensitizing agent by provoking Th1/Th2-dependent immune responses when applied topically or intrarectally. This leads to inflammation characterized by infiltration of T cells (notably CD4+), increased cytokine production (such as IL‑4 and TNF‑α), and tissue remodeling. The compound itself does not have direct therapeutic use in humans but is valuable for studying mechanisms of immune-mediated diseases[1][6][9]. Structurally, oxazolones are also important intermediates in organic synthesis and are present as motifs in several drugs.
