Oxiconazole is a broad-spectrum imidazole antifungal agent used topically to treat various skin infections caused by fungi, including athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), ringworm of the body (tinea corporis), and tinea versicolor. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis, which is essential for maintaining fungal cell membrane integrity. Specifically, oxiconazole inhibits the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase (a cytochrome P450 enzyme), leading to disruption of the fungal cell membrane and ultimately causing cell lysis. It may also inhibit DNA synthesis and suppress intracellular ATP concentrations in fungi. Oxiconazole is available as a cream or lotion for topical application and has low systemic absorption[1][3][6][8].
