Overview

Oxidized ATP (oATP) is a chemically modified analog of adenosine triphosphate considered a specific, irreversible antagonist of purinergic P2X7 (formerly known as P2Z) receptors. It covalently modifies these receptors, permanently inhibiting their activation by extracellular ATP. This blockade disrupts processes mediated by P2X7, such as ATP-induced Ca2+ influx, proinflammatory signaling, and membrane permeabilization in immune cells (macrophages and APCs). oATP is frequently used as an experimental tool to dissect purinergic signaling in immunology and inflammation models but is not an approved pharmaceutical. Its immunoregulatory effects include suppressing APC maturation and diminishing T cell-mediated immune responses in transplant models, and it attenuates inflammation in vivo[3][5][9][11][13].
