Overview

Oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) is an absorbable, synthetic mechanical barrier used to prevent postoperative adhesions and provide hemostasis. It is produced through the controlled oxidation of cellulose, resulting in a material that can be placed between surgical surfaces to physically separate them during the initial stages of wound healing. In a clinical trial conducted by National Taiwan University Hospital, ORC was evaluated for its efficacy in reducing post-thyroidectomy adhesions, which can cause neck discomfort, dysphagia, and skin-to-trachea tethering. The material is typically absorbed by the body within approximately two weeks, minimizing long-term foreign body reactions.
