Overview

Oxidronate disodium is a small molecule bisphosphonate compound that serves as the ligand for the diagnostic radiopharmaceutical Technetium Tc-99m oxidronate. It is primarily used as a skeletal imaging agent to visualize areas of altered osteogenesis. The molecule's mechanism of action involves high-affinity chemisorption onto the surface of hydroxyapatite crystals within the bone matrix. In clinical practice, the compound is provided in a kit (such as TechneScan HDP) and radiolabeled with technetium-99m prior to intravenous administration. This allows for sensitive detection of bone pathologies including metastatic bone disease, Paget's disease, osteomyelitis, and fractures via gamma scintigraphy. Developed by Mallinckrodt (now Curium), it was first FDA approved in 1981 and remains a standard tool in nuclear medicine for bone scanning.
