Oxidronic acid is a small molecule bisphosphonate used primarily as a diagnostic skeletal imaging agent. It is commonly administered in the form of its technetium Tc 99m complex (Tc 99m oxidronate, also known as TechneScan HDP) to visualize areas of altered osteogenesis in adults and children, such as those seen in metastatic bone disease, Paget's disease, arthritic conditions, osteomyelitis, and fractures[1][2][7]. The compound localizes on the surface of hydroxyapatite crystals in bone via chemisorption; uptake is greatest at sites with increased blood flow or active bone metabolism[7]. Its mechanism involves binding to hydroxyapatite within bone tissue. Oxidronic acid also exhibits antioxidant properties through electron donation and scavenging reactive oxygen species[6].
