Overview

Oxilofrine is a sympathomimetic small molecule and amphetamine derivative used primarily as an antihypotensive agent and antitussive. It acts as a norepinephrine releasing agent, indirectly stimulating both alpha and beta adrenergic receptors, with predominant activity at the beta-1 adrenergic receptor. This results in increased myocardial contractility (positive inotropic effect), elevated heart rate, vasoconstriction via alpha-1 activation, and increased blood pressure. Oxilofrine has been used to treat low blood pressure (hypotension), manage asthma exacerbations, suppress cough associated with inflamed mucosa (often in combination products), and enhance cardiac function during anesthesia. It is not approved for use in the United States but has been marketed under various brand names internationally[1][2][4][6].
