Overview
Oxitropium bromide is a small molecule bronchodilator used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)[1][4][5]. It acts as an anticholinergic agent by blocking muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in airway smooth muscle, thereby inhibiting acetylcholine-induced bronchoconstriction and promoting bronchodilation[1]. Its effect is similar to ipratropium but with a longer duration of action. The drug is not intended for immediate symptom relief but rather for regular use to reduce symptoms and improve lung function in patients with stable disease. Boehringer Ingelheim was the primary developer and manufacturer, but the product has been discontinued in some markets[1].
