OXM15 is a synthetic peptide and dual agonist of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucagon receptors, designed as an analogue of the endogenous hormone oxyntomodulin. Developed by Merck Research Laboratories, it was utilized in preclinical research to evaluate the metabolic effects of dual receptor signaling. While oxyntomodulin analogues are typically investigated for their potential to treat obesity by reducing appetite, OXM15 was found to paradoxically increase food intake in rat models by up to 20%. This orexigenic effect was attributed to its potent activation of the glucagon receptor, which appeared to override the anorectic signals of the GLP-1 receptor. Consequently, OXM15 serves as a significant tool compound for understanding the complex interplay and potency ratios required for dual GLP-1/glucagon receptor agonists in metabolic regulation.
