OXM9 is a synthetic peptide analogue of oxyntomodulin, acting as a dual agonist for the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucagon receptors. It was developed as part of a research program to identify potential treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes. The peptide was custom synthesized by Insight Biotechnology using solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) and features a 29-amino acid backbone derived from glucagon with 5–7 substitutions between residues 12–29 and a C-terminal extension to improve stability against enzymatic degradation. Preclinical studies in rats showed that while OXM9 effectively reduced body weight, it paradoxically maintained or increased food intake, a phenomenon likely driven by its specific balance of glucagon receptor activation.
