Overview

Oxolinic acid is a synthetic quinolone antibiotic developed in Japan in the 1970s. It acts primarily by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (type II topoisomerase), thereby interfering with bacterial DNA replication and synthesis[1][3][6]. This mechanism is similar to that of nalidixic acid. Oxolinic acid also exhibits dopamine reuptake inhibition and has shown stimulant effects in animal studies[1]. While it was previously used for urinary tract infections and other indications in human medicine, its use has largely been replaced by fluoroquinolones. Currently, it is mainly authorized for veterinary use, particularly in finfish, calves, pigs, and poultry[5][7].
