Overview

Oxoplatin is a platinum(IV)-based anticancer compound notable for its structural relation to established drugs like oxaliplatin and cisplatin, but distinguished by its oxidation state and chemical properties. Unlike oxaliplatin, which is clinically approved, oxoplatin is a preclinical compound primarily used in research settings to study platinum drug mechanisms and potential alternative cytotoxic agents. Like other platinum complexes, oxoplatin exerts its antitumor effects by forming DNA cross-links, disrupting DNA replication and transcription, thereby triggering cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Because of its platinum(IV) oxidation state, oxoplatin is less reactive than platinum(II) counterparts and may serve as a prodrug, undergoing intracellular reduction to produce active platinum(II) species. Its cytotoxicity profile, cellular uptake mechanisms, and resistance properties are under investigation in laboratory models. Oxoplatin is not approved for clinical use, and has not advanced beyond preclinical development as of present.
