Overview

Oxopurin is a sustained-release formulation of pentoxifylline, a xanthine derivative. It functions as a hemorheologic agent, improving blood flow by decreasing blood viscosity and enhancing the flexibility of red blood cells. Its mechanism of action also involves inhibiting phosphodiesterase, particularly PDE4, which leads to increased intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels and subsequent vasodilation. Additionally, it acts as an antagonist at adenosine 2 receptors, inhibits platelet aggregation, and reduces inflammation by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines and leukocyte adhesion. Oxopurin is primarily used to alleviate symptoms of peripheral artery disease, such as intermittent claudication.
