Overview

OXP005 is a novel oral formulation of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) naproxen, developed by Oxford Pharmascience using its proprietary OxiPRO technology. This technology is designed to reduce the gastrointestinal (GI) side effects typically associated with NSAIDs, such as gastroduodenal irritation and ulceration, by modifying how the drug interacts with the stomach lining. Naproxen, the active ingredient, is a non-selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, which are responsible for the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. By providing a gastric-safe version of naproxen, OXP005 aims to offer effective relief for rheumatic diseases and various painful conditions with an improved safety profile. Clinical development has included Phase 1 studies comparing its GI impact to standard naproxen formulations using endoscopic evaluation.
