Overview

Oxprenolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic antagonist (beta blocker) with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity, used primarily for the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, arrhythmias, and anxiety. It acts by competitively inhibiting beta-adrenergic receptors (both beta-1 and beta-2), thereby reducing heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure. Oxprenolol also inhibits renin production in the juxtaglomerular apparatus of the kidney by blocking beta-2 adrenergic receptors, leading to decreased angiotensin II and aldosterone levels. The drug is moderately lipophilic and crosses the blood-brain barrier more readily than hydrophilic beta blockers. It has partial agonist activity (intrinsic sympathomimetic activity), which may result in less pronounced negative inotropic and chronotropic effects compared to other non-selective beta blockers like propranolol. Oxprenolol has been discontinued or withdrawn from several markets.
