Oxybuprocaine is an ester-type local anesthetic primarily used in ophthalmology and otolaryngology to numb the surface of the eye or mucous membranes for short-term medical procedures, such as tonometry, minor operations, removal of foreign bodies from the eye, and diagnostic procedures in ENT. It acts by binding to sodium channels on neuronal membranes, reversibly stabilizing them and decreasing their permeability to sodium ions. This inhibits depolarization and blocks initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. The onset of anesthesia occurs within 30–50 seconds and lasts about 10–30 minutes depending on perfusion. Oxybuprocaine is metabolized by plasma cholinesterases and liver esterases[1][4][5][8].
