Oxybuprocaine + fluorescein is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic solution used for diagnostic procedures requiring both local anesthesia and corneal staining, such as Goldmann applanation tonometry and the removal of foreign bodies. Oxybuprocaine is an ester-type local anesthetic that reversibly blocks voltage-gated sodium channels on nerve membranes, inhibiting the conduction of sensory impulses from the cornea and conjunctiva to provide rapid, short-acting surface anesthesia. Fluorescein sodium is a diagnostic dye that stains areas of epithelial loss and fluoresces under cobalt blue light, facilitating the assessment of tear film stability and corneal integrity. The Medical University of Vienna has specifically investigated the impact of different formulations of this combination, including preservative-free single-dose units (SDU) and preserved multi-dose units (MDU), on tear film thickness and ocular surface health in healthy subjects.
