Overview

Oxybutynin is a small molecule antimuscarinic and anticholinergic agent used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder such as urinary urgency, frequency, incontinence (urine leakage), and increased night-time urination. It works by relaxing the detrusor muscle of the bladder through antagonism of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (primarily M3 subtype), thereby reducing involuntary contractions and increasing bladder capacity. Oxybutynin is also indicated for neurogenic detrusor overactivity associated with neurological conditions like spina bifida in children. It is available as immediate-release tablets or syrup (oral), extended-release tablets (oral), topical gel (Gelnique), and transdermal patch (Oxytrol)[1][5][9].
