Overview

HP-5070 is a transdermal patch formulation containing 20% oxybutynin hydrochloride, developed by Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical for the treatment of primary palmar hyperhidrosis. Oxybutynin acts as a competitive antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, particularly the M3 subtype located on eccrine sweat glands, thereby inhibiting cholinergic stimulation of sweating. While oral oxybutynin is used off-label for hyperhidrosis, its utility is often limited by systemic anticholinergic side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation. HP-5070 utilizes Hisamitsu's proprietary transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) to provide localized delivery to the palms, aiming to achieve high local concentrations for efficacy while potentially minimizing systemic exposure and associated adverse effects. The drug is currently in Phase 3 clinical development in Japan.
