AA2010 is a pharmaceutical drug candidate consisting of a transmucosal film formulation of oxybutynin, a well-established muscarinic antagonist, developed for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB). The product utilizes the BioErodible MucoAdhesive (BEMA) technology, which involves a small, flexible, polymer film that is applied to the buccal mucosa (the lining of the cheek). This delivery system is designed to provide rapid and efficient absorption of oxybutynin directly into the systemic circulation, bypassing the first-pass metabolism in the liver and gastrointestinal tract. By avoiding primary hepatic metabolism, AA2010 aims to reduce the formation of N-desethyloxybutynin, a metabolite primarily responsible for common anticholinergic side effects such as dry mouth and constipation. The drug was developed by Auxilium Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with BioDelivery Sciences International (BDSI).
