Oxycinchophen is a synthetic small molecule classified as a phenylquinoline derivative (IUPAC name: 3-hydroxy-2-phenylquinoline-4-carboxylic acid). It was developed as an antidiuretic and uricosuric agent. Historically, it was used in the management of diabetes insipidus due to its ability to reduce water output by influencing the pituitary system and enhancing antidiuretic hormone production rather than acting directly on renal tubules. Oxycinchophen also exhibits anti-inflammatory activity and has been used for rheumatic conditions such as arthritis. Its uricosuric effect is attributed to its ability to displace urate from albumin and promote uric acid excretion. However, clinical use was limited by significant toxicity (notably in about 20% of patients), leading to discontinuation of development[1][2][6][8].
