Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic used for the management of moderate to severe pain, including both acute and chronic pain. It was first synthesized in Germany in 1916 from thebaine, an opium alkaloid. Oxycodone acts primarily as an agonist at mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system, altering the perception and response to pain. It also has activity at kappa and delta opioid receptors. The drug is available in immediate-release and extended-release formulations for oral administration, with onset of action within 15 minutes and duration up to six hours for immediate-release forms. Due to its high potential for addiction, misuse, and dependence, it is classified as a controlled substance[1][4][6][8]. Common side effects include euphoria, constipation, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, itching, dry mouth, sweating; serious risks include respiratory depression and overdose.
