Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oxycodone is a potent semisynthetic opioid analgesic used to relieve severe pain. It comes in immediate-release and extended-release formulations. The extended-release versions (such as OxyContin and Xtampza ER) are designed to provide pain relief over 12 hours, requiring fewer daily doses compared to immediate-release formulations. Oxycodone works by binding to opioid receptors in the central nervous system and periphery, primarily mu-opioid receptors, inhibiting pain responses by changing how the brain and nervous system respond to pain.
