Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The oxycodone vaccine (specifically Oxy(Gly)4-sKLH) is an investigational conjugate vaccine designed to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) and prevent oxycodone-induced overdose. Developed by researchers at the University of Minnesota and the University of Washington, and licensed to CounterX Therapeutics, the vaccine consists of an oxycodone-based hapten conjugated to the subunit keyhole limpet hemocyanin (sKLH) carrier protein via a tetraglycine linker. It works by stimulating the production of oxycodone-specific polyclonal IgG antibodies that sequester the drug in the bloodstream, preventing it from crossing the blood-brain barrier and entering the central nervous system. This blocks the euphoric, analgesic, and respiratory-depressant effects of oxycodone without interfering with other medications used in opioid use disorder treatment (such as methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, or naloxone). The vaccine is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial.
