Oxycort A

Oxycort A is a topical ophthalmic and otic ointment that combines the tetracycline-class antibiotic oxytetracycline (as oxytetracycline hydrochloride) with the low‑potency glucocorticoid hydrocortisone acetate for local treatment of inflammatory conditions of the eye and, when prescribed by an ENT specialist, the external ear that are complicated by susceptible bacterial infection. Oxytetracycline exerts a bacteriostatic effect by binding the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis in a broad range of Gram‑positive, Gram‑negative, and atypical organisms, while hydrocortisone acetate provides local anti‑inflammatory, anti‑edematous, and antipruritic effects through glucocorticoid receptor–mediated suppression of phospholipase A2 and pro‑inflammatory mediators.[1][13] This combination allows simultaneous control of infection and inflammation at ocular or external auditory sites, but prolonged use can increase intraocular pressure and risk of glaucoma, optic nerve damage, and posterior subcapsular cataract, necessitating short treatment courses and monitoring when used around the eye.[1]
