Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oxygel is a highly oxygenated, shear-thinning, and self-healing hydrogel biomaterial composed of hyaluronic acid and a perfluorocarbon (such as perfluorodecalin) nanoemulsion. It is designed to carry high oxygen payloads and slowly release them over an extended period (e.g., up to 90–100 hours) to overcome hypoxia-mediated cell death. Oxygel is being developed for applications in regenerative medicine, specifically to enhance the survival and function of encapsulated pancreatic islets or stem cell-derived beta cells in macroencapsulation devices for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. Additionally, it is being investigated as a localized oxygen-delivery system to reverse hypoxia in solid tumors, such as esophageal cancer, thereby improving their sensitivity to radiation therapy.
