Overview

Oxygen is a colorless, odorless gas essential for aerobic life. In medicine, it is used as a therapeutic agent to treat or prevent hypoxemia and hypoxia in various acute and chronic conditions. Oxygen therapy increases the partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood and improves tissue oxygenation. It acts as the final electron acceptor in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (via cytochrome c oxidase), enabling ATP production during aerobic respiration. Medical uses include resuscitation, anesthesia support, treatment of respiratory failure (e.g., COPD exacerbations), carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness (via hyperbaric therapy), severe trauma or hemorrhage, cluster headaches, wound healing (hyperbaric use), and more[1][5][6][8][10]. Oxygen can be administered via nasal cannulae, face masks, ventilators or hyperbaric chambers depending on clinical need[2][5]. Safety precautions are critical due to its role in supporting combustion[7].
