Overview

Oxymix is an inhaled medical gas mixture consisting of 92% oxygen (O2) and 8% carbon dioxide (CO2), developed as an investigational tool by the Medical University of Vienna. It is designed to study neurovascular coupling and the regulation of blood flow in the retina and optic nerve head. While high concentrations of oxygen typically cause vasoconstriction, the inclusion of carbon dioxide in the mixture is intended to counteract this effect, allowing for the assessment of flicker-induced vasodilatation and tissue oxygen tension (pO2) changes. The mixture has been primarily utilized in clinical research settings involving healthy volunteers to understand the physiological mechanisms of ocular perfusion and retinal oxygen regulation.
