Drug intelligence / Profile preview
oxygen + nitrogen is a medicinal gas mixture consisting of equal parts oxygen (50%) and nitrogen (50%). Developed by Air Liquide Santé International, this specific formulation was utilized as a control or placebo intervention in clinical trials, most notably the Phase 3 study NCT01146743. This trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of Kalinox (a 50/50 nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture) for pain management during care procedures in pediatric patients with burns. While oxygen is essential for cellular respiration and nitrogen serves as an inert carrier gas, the 50/50 ratio in this context is designed to mimic the delivery of the active analgesic gas mixture without providing the sedative or analgesic effects of nitrous oxide, thereby serving as a blinded comparator.
