Overview

Oxygen + ozone refers to a combination of medical-grade oxygen (O2) and ozone (O3) gases used in alternative medicine as "ozone therapy." Ozone is a triatomic form of oxygen with strong oxidizing properties. In this context, the mixture is administered via various routes—such as injection, autohemotherapy (mixing blood with the gas and reinfusing), or insufflation—to purportedly increase tissue oxygenation, modulate immune responses, reduce inflammation, and inactivate pathogens. The proposed mechanisms include stimulation of red blood cell metabolism for improved tissue oxygen delivery; modulation of cytokine production by immunocompetent cells; downregulation of oxidative stress; and direct antimicrobial effects against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa[1][3][5][8]. Despite its use for conditions like circulatory disorders, chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), infections (including viral diseases), wound healing support, autoimmune diseases, chronic pain syndromes (e.g., fibromyalgia), diabetic ulcers, cardiovascular disease adjunctive care—and even cancer support—there is insufficient high-quality evidence supporting safety or efficacy. Major regulatory agencies such as the FDA prohibit its use due to toxicity concerns at therapeutic doses[1][2][6]. Adverse effects can be severe if inhaled or improperly administered.
