Oxygen-enriched oleic matrix gel is a therapeutic formulation and component of a Class IIb medical device designed for advanced wound care. The gel consists of an olive oil (oleic) matrix that has been enriched with oxygen and ozone, allowing it to store and subsequently release reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide and superoxide. Unlike highly unstable ozone-only treatments, this matrix provides a controlled, prolonged release of low-dose ROS to the wound bed. This mechanism modulates the tissue microenvironment by acting as an antimicrobial agent, stimulating angiogenesis through the recruitment of immune factors and growth factors like VEGF, and promoting re-epithelialization. It is frequently used in conjunction with polyester and polyurethane scaffolds, specifically preformed as breast cups (e.g., Oxy-Cup), to manage complex skin lesions associated with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC), surgical wounds, burns, and chronic ulcers.
