Overview

Oxygen nanobubbles (ONBs) are sub-micron gas-filled cavities, typically less than 200 nm in diameter, that encapsulate high concentrations of oxygen within a stabilizing shell composed of lipids, polymers (such as PLGA), or surfactants. These nanostructures are designed to enhance oxygen delivery to tissues, bypassing or supplementing traditional pulmonary gas exchange. In clinical development, ONBs are being investigated for their ability to improve exercise tolerance in patients with pulmonary fibrosis and to enhance the efficacy of cancer therapies by mitigating tumor hypoxia. Preclinical studies also suggest potential applications in treating ischemic stroke, ocular diseases (like diabetic retinopathy), and inflammatory conditions such as colitis. Beyond medicine, oxygen nanobubbles are utilized in environmental engineering for water remediation and in agriculture to promote soil health and plant growth.
