Overview

Oxyglobin (hemoglobin glutamer-200 (bovine)) is a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) developed by Biopure Corporation for veterinary use. It consists of ultrapurified, glutaraldehyde-polymerized bovine hemoglobin (13 g/dL) suspended in a modified Lactated Ringer's solution. The polymerization process results in hemoglobin polymers with an average molecular mass of 200 kDa, which remain within the plasma to provide immediate oxygen-carrying capacity. The product is FDA-approved for the treatment of anemia in dogs, regardless of the underlying cause (e.g., hemolysis, blood loss, or ineffective erythropoiesis), by increasing systemic oxygen content and improving clinical signs. It has also been utilized off-label in feline patients for the management of hypotension.
