Oxylanthanum carbonate is an orally administered, next-generation lanthanum-based phosphate binding agent developed for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. It utilizes proprietary nanoparticle technology to deliver the same phosphate-binding capacity as traditional lanthanum carbonate but in a much smaller tablet size and lower drug volume, improving patient adherence by reducing pill burden. The drug works by binding dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming insoluble complexes that are eliminated via feces rather than absorbed into the bloodstream. This mechanism helps control serum phosphate levels and prevent complications associated with hyperphosphatemia such as secondary hyperparathyroidism and cardiovascular disease. Oxylanthanum carbonate is being developed under FDA’s 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway and has not yet received FDA approval[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
