Oxypertine is a small molecule antipsychotic drug of the tryptamine and phenylpiperazine classes, originally introduced in the 1960s for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychoses. It was also evaluated for severe anxiety and mania. Oxypertine acts primarily as an antagonist at serotonin 5‑HT₂ and dopamine D₂ receptors, with high affinity for both targets. Its mechanism includes depletion of catecholamines (dopamine and norepinephrine) in the brain, while sparing serotonin to a greater extent than reserpine or tetrabenazine. The drug’s neuroleptic efficacy is attributed to these actions on monoaminergic neurotransmission. Oxypertine is structurally related to other "pertines" such as alpertine, milipertine, and solypertine[1][4][6].
