Overview

Oxyphenonium is a synthetic quaternary ammonium anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) agent used to treat or prevent spasms in the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, such as those seen in irritable bowel syndrome. It is also indicated as an adjunct in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers and for relief of visceral spasms. Oxyphenonium works by blocking muscarinic acetylcholine receptors on smooth muscle, thereby reducing the effect of acetylcholine and directly relaxing smooth muscle tissue. This results in inhibition of gastrointestinal propulsive motility, decreased gastric acid secretion, and control over excessive pharyngeal, tracheal, and bronchial secretions. The drug has also been used topically (as eye drops) to induce mydriasis (pupil dilation)[1][2][3][5][6][7].
