Oxypurinol is the primary active metabolite of allopurinol and functions as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It reduces uric acid production by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for converting hypoxanthine to xanthine and then to uric acid. This mechanism underlies its use in conditions characterized by hyperuricemia, such as gout and tumor lysis syndrome. Oxypurinol is formed in vivo after administration of allopurinol and is believed to mediate most of the pharmacological effects attributed to allopurinol therapy[5][6][7]. As a structural analog of hypoxanthine, oxypurinol also enhances reutilization of hypoxanthine and xanthine for nucleotide synthesis without disrupting normal nucleic acid anabolism[6][7].
