Overview

Oxyquinoline sulfate (commonly known as quinosol) is a small-molecule antiseptic, disinfectant, and metal chelator. It is the sulfate salt of 8-hydroxyquinoline, which exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial, antifungal, and amebicidal activities. Quinosol functions primarily by chelating essential divalent metal ions (such as copper, zinc, iron, and manganese), thereby disrupting microbial metal homeostasis, inhibiting metalloenzymes, and generating intracellular oxidative stress. In Brazil, it is manufactured by Laboratorio Daudt Oliveira as an active ingredient in the topical oropharyngeal antiseptic product Malvatricin, which is formulated as a mouth rinse, lozenge, or spray for the treatment of sore throat (pharyngitis), mouth sores (aphthae), and other oropharyngeal infections.
